Johannesburg - Across Africa, December is synonymous with summer, celebrations and reflecting on significant events that happened throughout the year.

Social media has been abuzz with users’ listening personalities, top genres and top artists for the year, and as always, people’s confessions of the songs that they listened to multiple times in one day.

Amapiano sensation Kabza De Small, a multi-award winner, was one of the most streamed African artists in 2022.

The Abelele artist is not only the most streamed South African artist, but he is also one of only two South African artists to feature in the top 10 most streamed artists overall in South Africa, ranking second to Drake and ahead of The Weekend, who claim the number three spot.

Kabza De Small’s music album KOA II Part 1 was also the most streamed South African album in South Africa in 2022.

In South Africa, the top streamed artist was Drake, followed by Kabza De Small and the top album was KOA II Part 1 by Kabza De Small.

In Ghana, the top streamed artist was Burna Boy, followed by Black Sherif and the top album was Love, Damini by Burna Boy.

“To mark the arrival of Spotify Wrapped 2022 and to express our gratitude for all of our partners, key media and talented content creators, we hosted three exciting events in Africa. Rooftop sundowners in South Africa, a stylish brunch in Kenya, and a night to remember in Nigeria all took place to celebrate Wrapped and the end of the year,” Miche Atagana, Head of PR and Comms in sub-Saharan Africa, said.

South Africa’s event on November 30 was all about the 80s: guests came in their best 80s throwback get-ups, and dancers got the vibe of the night going alongside media personality and actor Siv Ngesi, who hosted the event.

Brunch in Kenya took place on December 3. Guests were asked to dress up as their favourite song for brunch, and they did not disappoint.

Media personality and musical performer Anto Neosoul got the party started with performances by Kenyan DJs Blinky Bill and DJ IV.

“South Africans can be proud of what their creatives in music are achieving. They are making noise in the right places and at the right time,” says Warren Bokwe, Spotify’s Artist and Label Partnerships Manager in South Africa.

The top-streamed South African artists locally in 2022 are amapiano artists.
